HISTORY

On July 1 1920, Lexington Clinic began its commitment of providing quality health care services to Central Kentucky. The idea of forming a clinic for group practice was implemented by two doctors, David Barrow, M.D., and Waller O. Bullock, M.D. They, together with seven other physicians, formed a partnership patterned after the Mayo Clinic. Its early years were marked by many medical firsts.

  • Dr. Elmer S. Maxwell, who joined the Clinic on October 1, 1920, was the first pathologist in Lexington. Under Dr. Maxwell’s guidance, with the cooperation of the University of Kentucky, Lexington Clinic established a school for medical technologists.
  • In 1925, Dr. Donnan Harding joined the Lexington Clinic staff as the first trained radiologist in Lexington. He was a pioneer in both diagnostic and therapeutic X-ray, establishing the first radiology department in Lexington.
  • Lexington Clinic acquired Lexington’s first operating microscope, used for middle ear and eye surgeries.
  • Lexington Clinic provided the first radiation therapy unit for treatment of cancer, introducing radium in the treatment of cancer.
  • For many years, the only artificial kidney unit in Central Kentucky was owned and operated by Lexington Clinic.
  • Lexington Clinic physicians introduced the gastroscopic camera and gastroscopic biopsy.
  • In the late 1960’s, Lexington Clinic physicians developed the first cardiac care unit in Lexington at Saint Joseph Hospital.
  • Lexington Clinic installed the first 16-slice CT scanner in Lexington that can rotate around a patient’s body in only a half a second in 2004.
  • In 2005, Dr. Alexis Norelle, Neurosurgery, performed the first artificial disc spine surgery in Lexington.
  • The Center for Breast Care at Lexington Clinic became the first breast center in Lexington accredited by the American College of Radiology in Mammography, Breast Ultrasound, Breast Ultrasound Core Biopsy, and Stereotactic Breast Biopsy in 2005.
  • In 2006, Dr. Richard Floyd, IV, performed the first thoracic ablation surgery for atrial fibrillation.

Since its inception, Lexington Clinic has also been committed to medical education and has recognized its responsibility to support and promote medical research. As a result, in 1963, the Lexington Clinic Foundation for Medical Education and Research, Inc. was established. The Foundation may receive tax-exempt gifts which, in turn, are granted to researchers for various projects. The Foundation is under the direction of a Board of Trustees comprised of members of the scientific, educational and business community, who serve without pay.

Today, Lexington Clinic enjoys the reputation of a well-established and highly respected multi-specialty group practice. We're made up of approximately 200 providers offering care in 30 specialties. Lexington Clinic has seen many changes over the years, but our main goal of providing quality healthcare to our patients will never change.
